SALEM, Ore. -- All-American Liz Corr had an RBI double in the fifth inning as Shippensburg overcame an 8-4 hitting deficit to upset West Florida in the opening round of the 2003 NCAA Division II Softball Championships.

The Lady Raiders did the most damage in the first inning, when Sarah Costa took a 1-1 pitch to deep left field to give Ship a 2-0 lead. West Florida cut the lead in half in the top of the second with a solo home run from Meghan Stastook.

The Argonauts, who fell to 50-11 on the season, tied the game 2-2 in the fourth when Stastook singled in pinch runner Jackie Matthews.

Shippensburg (37-12) would take the lead for good in the fifth, as Amanda Collins slid under a tag attempt by UWF catcher Stephanie York with two outs in the inning.

"We had timely hitting," Shippensburg head coach Bob Brookens said. "We have been doing that all year. This game was no different."

Kelley Teisi, a third team All-America selection, scattered eight hits to improve to 21-4 on the season. Tanya Teague (17-7) took the loss for West Florida, who now faces LeMoyne in an elimination game on Friday.

Shippensburg, who is making its first appearance in the national tournament, will face Georgia College and State University in a winner's bracket game.

West Florida squandered two chances to take the lead. The Argonauts left the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings, but were able to come up with just one run.

"You can get the hits on some days and on other's you can't," UWF head coach Tami Cyr said. "We hit well tonight, we just didn't hit the ball at the right time. That is what really hurt us."
