SALEM, Ore. -- In what proved to be both a slugfest and a pitcher's duel, UC Davis scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-5 decision over third ranked North Dakota State at the NCAA Division II Softball Championships.
Emily Hetzner and Susan Churchwell each had RBI singles in the ninth for the Aggies. Hetzner went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Churchwell went 2-for-4 at the plate with the one RBI.
Churchwell started the game for UC Davis, but was chased after giving up a two-run home run from Molly Pufall in the fifth. Amy Rosson came in for the Aggies and shut down the powerful NDSU lineup, striking out 12 of the 16 batters she faced including a string of seven straight.
"She did a great job for us," said UC Davis head coach Kathy DeYoung. "She was patient until we could put together some hits."
Lindsey Graham took the loss for the Lady Bison, despite retiring 13 consecutive batters at one time.
NDSU got on the scoreboard in the second inning, when Heather Hyatt delivered a two run, bases loaded single off of Churchwell.
UC Davis answered in the third, when Hetzner hit a two run single and Megan Turman scored her with a liner down the right field line to give the Aggies a 3-2 advantage.
Turman again delivered for UC Davis in the fourth, giving the Aggies a 5-2 advantage with a two run single.
NDSU got a single run in the fourth frame, when Meghan Potter scored on a wild pitch.
UC Davis advances in the winner's bracket to face either Georgia College and State University or Shippensburg, while North Dakota State will face LeMoyne in an elimination game Saturday at noon PST.
