STARKVILLE, Miss. – Juniors Cara Goodwin of Good Hope High School in Cullman, Ala., Jessica Martinez of Estacado High School in Lubbock, Texas, and Rochelle Roberts of Vanden High School in Fairfield, Calif., have all been named as the High School Players of the Week for their respective regions by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for games played through March 10, 2012.
Representing the South Region, Goodwin threw three shut-outs in one week, including a 12-0 no-hitter over Priceville where she struck out 13 of the 17 batters she faced. She struck out 84 in 42.1 innings pitched. The junior was equally strong offensively, going 12 for 25 with 2 doubles, a triple, a home run, 8 runs scored and 6 RBI. Her efforts have helped the Raiders get off to a 7-1-1 start this season.
In the South Central Region, Martinez had an outstanding week at the plate. The junior third basemen hit .611 for the week with a double, 2 home runs, and 10 RBI. So far this season Martinez has is hitting .636 and owns a 1.036 slugging percentage. Her efforts at the plate have helped the Matadors record to improve to 15-4.
Rounding out this week's awards from the West Region, Roberts had an outstanding week both in the circle and at the plate. The junior right-hander went 5-0 finishing the week with a .027 ERA with 58 strikeouts she led the Region with a 5-1 record and a .27 ERA. The junior struck out 51 and walked only 2 of the 153 batters she faced. At the plate Roberts hit .600 with a home run and 7 RBI. Her performance helped the Vikings improve to 7-1 on the season.
