STARKVILLE, Miss. – Seniors Ketarah Devries of Forreston High School in Forreston, Ill., Katelynn Halcomb of Conner High School in Hebron, Ky., Ashley Palmer of Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., and juniors Allison Dailey of Commack High School in Commack, N.Y., and Whitney Gillespie of Pelham High School in Pelham, Ala. have all been named as the High School Players of the Week for their respective regions by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for games played through March 31, 2012.
Representing the North Region, Devries pitched her team to three victories on the week, including throwing 5 perfect innings in a 13-0 win over Stockton (Ill.). In that game the senior struck out 9 of the 15 batters she faced. Devries also had a successful week at the plate, going 6 for 8 with a double, homerun, 4 runs scored and 9 RBI. On the season the senior owns a .43 ERA and has struck out 84 of the 186 batters she has faced. Her efforts have helped the Cardinals get off to a 8-1 start this season, and a #2 ranking in the state.
In the South Central Region, Halcomb had an oustanding week at the plate. The catcher hit .684 belting out 13 hits and 6 RBI. With her efforts, she helped Conner win the 3rd annual Pete Noll Tournament championship with a thrilling 5-3 win over Carroll County (Ky.), earning tournament MVP honors. Halcomb currently owns a .636 average with a .714 on base percentage and .818 slugging percentage. The Cougars are currently 6-2 overall this season.
Palmer had an outstanding week at the plate, and led the West Region with a .800 average and 10 RBI on the week. In an 11-4 win over Chaparral (Ariz.) the senior was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 homeruns, and 5 RBI finishing the day with a whoping 2.5 slugging percentage. On the year Palmer is hitting .493 with 25 runs scored and 36 RBI. Her efforts have helped the Wolves record improve to 16-4, and a state rank of 11.
Out of the East Region, Dailey started her Varsity career with a bang. In her first at bat, the junior leadoff hitter belted a homerun to start off the Cougars first game of the season. She finished the week going 7 for 11 with 4 RBI and 6 runs scored. The speedy outfielder was also 4 for 4 in stolen bases. Dailey's efforts helped the Cougars finish 3-0 on the week.
Rounding out this week's awards from the South Region, Gillespie was outstanding in the circle. The junior went 3-0, including tossing 2 shutouts, one of which was a one-hitter against Dothan (Ala.). The junior is 9-1 on the seasion with an ERA of .66 and 81 strikeouts against only 8 walks. The wins helped the #2 in the state Panthers improve to 20-3.
