NFCA, executive director, message from nfca executive director, coronavirus, cover-19

Dear NFCA Members,

The impact of COVID-19 has extended to athletics with unprecedented change and decisions happening in just this past week. A few collegiate conferences have canceled all spring sports (most recently, the NESCAC, Ivy League, and Patriot League). Many institutions have implemented game-viewing and travel restrictions. Given the NBA’s decision last night to suspend its season, it is hard to predict how much longer we will be allowed to continue playing and watching the game we all love during the spring.

The NFCA exists to support our coaches, players, umpires, and fans of softball. The cornerstone of our organization is caring for the physical, mental, and overall well-being of our members. It is out of this tenet that we encourage all of our members to embrace the following best practices:

1. Consult the CDCCDC website and when able, adopt its recommendations.

2. Be informed about and follow the advice and directives of your conference, your institution, your athletic department, and your medical staff. Be aware that some universities have implemented domestic travel restrictions; however, athletic teams may also be exempt from these. It is important to keep your team, and team parents, aware of any policies that may affect team travel or protocols.

3. Communicate with your team, playing opponents, and officials of any changes in schedule or game protocols as soon as you can. Pre- and post-game handshakes can be replaced with another gesture of sportsmanship, like a wave or a nod and a verbal greeting.

Barring total self-quarantine, it will be nearly impossible to eliminate all risk of contracting this virus. Still, institutions have taken many precautions to reduce the spread of this illness. Do your best to reduce risk of virus transmission, especially if you are traveling with your team. Encourage frequent hand washing, clean surfaces and equipment you use regularly, and try not to add to the "fear pandemic."

The NFCA will share relevant and helpful information as we receive it. And, of course, we welcome updates and other advice you receive and think would be helpful to send our way. Should your governing body implement competitive restrictions, we would appreciate you sending those to your NFCA Divisional Liaison.

Please let us know if we can be of any assistance to your program at this time.

Sincerely,

Keep Your Coaching Pitch Perfect.
