NCAA Division II Softball Championship
Jodie Ohlau’s two-run home run sparked a three-run third inning that propelled SIU-Edwardsville to a 3-1 victory over Florida Southern in opening-round action at the 2007 NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Akron, Ohio.
Lauren Zembruski singled to lead-off the inning for the Cougars (46-8). Ohlau, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, then blasted an offering from FSC starter Megan Brown over the left field fence for the early 2-0 edge.
SIUE picked up its final run two hitters later as Ashley Price singled, stole second and scored on a single to right from Kaileigh Rousey.
That would be all the run support all-American Kaitlin Colosimo would need as she limited the Mocs (49-14) to a run on six hits while improving to 27-3 on the year.
Brown allowed the trio of runs on six hits and walked five as she fell to 32-9. Florida Southern stranded eight runners in the contest, while SIUE left 10 on the bases.
SIU-Edwardsville faces the winner of Thursday night’s game between Cal State Stanislaus and Nebraska-Omaha Friday at 7:30 p.m. EDT, while the Mocs face the loser of that contest in an elimination game.
