CLEARWATER, Fla. – Day one of the first-ever NFCA Top Recruit tournament saw plenty of excitement under the sunny Florida skies as pool play in the 46-team event began. Nineteen 16-and-under teams and 27 18-and-under teams converged on the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater on Friday for the three-day recruiting tournament. 

Team North Florida-Fagan turned in a perfect 3-0 record on the day and clinched its spot in the Gold 18U bracket by beating its opponents by a combined 23 runs. Gainesville Gold-McFadyen also went 3-0 on Friday and clinched its spot in the Gold bracket with a hard fought 3-1 win over Lady Gators-Flannery. Team North Florida and Gainesville Gold will meet in a quarterfinal match-up on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. 

One of the highlights of day one was a no-hitter tossed by Katie Kalasunas of the West Pines Diamond Dusters-Schmalz. The Diamond Dusters turned in a 2-1 clip on the day after falling to the the Gold Coast Hurricanes-Norman, 2-0, in a battle of undefeated teams in the opening day finale. 

Pool play will continue at 8 a.m. on Saturday and wind-up at 10 a.m. Bracket play will begin at 1:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday. Each team is guaranteed two games in bracket play; with teams advancing to the championship of their respective brackets receiving three. For complete scores and brackets, click herehere.
