LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After striking out 51 batters while allowing just one earned run over 26 innings of work, Salisbury sophomore pitcher Rachel Johnson has earned Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III Player of the Week honors for the week of April 8-14.
Johnson appeared in five games, earning four victories and one save while pitching three complete games in victories against Wesley (7-0), Catholic (4-0) and Stevenson (3-0).
Twice during the five-game span, Johnson struck out 17 batters in a single contest and also turned in another 12-strikeout performance. She allowed just one earned run off five hits.
In her victory against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Wesley College, Johnson fanned 12-of-21 batters faced en route to recording a perfect game during the 7-0 win.
Up next for the Salisbury Sea Gulls (30-2) and Johnson is a double-header matchup against Gettysburg.
The Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week is voted on by a committee of eight NCAA Division III softball coaches representing the eight NCAA regions. Voting reflects the previous week’s performances from Monday through Sunday of each week.
