Tournament Most Valuable Player Kym Kling tossed a four-hit shutout and Pam Salinas' RBI- single capped a two-run first inning to lead St. Mary's to its first-ever NCAA Division II softball national championship. Natalie Hill walked with one out in the top of the first, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch to put the Lady Rattlers on top. Salinas followed with her single to left to score Veronica Garcia, who had walked and advanced to second on the wild pitch. Kelly Burt hit leadoff singles in both the first and third innings, and Grand Valley State put a runner on base in each of the first four innings, but Kling never allowed any runner past second base. Kling retired eight consecutive batters during one stretch before Rachel Blain reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. St. Mary's, which was held to six hits in two games on Sunday, exploded for 10 hits Monday. Hill, Garcia and Ashley Boedecker had two hits apiece for the Lady Rattlers. Grand Valley State pitcher Jennifer Mackson, who retired the last 19 batters she faced in the Lakers' eight-inning 1-0 win over St. Mary's Sunday night, extended her streak to 20 before issuing the first-inning walk to Hill. For the championship, Kling posted a 4-1 record with a 0.36 earned run average, allowing only two earned runs in 39.1 innings pitched. She pitched two complete game shutouts and combined on a third at the championship. She recorded 40 strikeouts and allowed only three walks. Both St. Mary's and Grand Valley State were making their first- ever appearances in the national finals, as well as advancing to the championship game for the first time ever. St. Mary's won a national championship in NAIA in 1987. St. Mary's head coach Donna Fields was a member of the 1987 national championship team. Below is a listing of the All-Tournament Team.
