Sue Candrea, the wife of U.S. Olympic and University of Arizona coach Mike Candrea, died Sunday of complications from a brain aneurysm. She was with the Olympic team Friday at the airport in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, when she became ill.
She underwent surgery at a local hospital but never recovered.
Mike Candrea was at his wife's side, as well as the Candrea children — Mikel, 24, and Michelle, 21.
Sue Candrea had traveled with her husband throughout the tour, and the two were looking forward to 10 days off the road before regrouping for the Athens trip. The USA Olympic Team went on to Stratford, Conn., to finish its pre-Olympic tour with a perfect 54-0 record.
"Sue was truly a cherished individual whose love and support of her family and softball touched all she met," said USA Softball director of national teams Ronnie Isham. "Her loss is a tragic one and comes as a shock to all."
Funeral arrangements are pending. The Candreas live in Casa Grande, Ariz. If you would like to send a card, the address is:
