STARKVILLE, Miss. - While The Woodlands High School (The Woodlands, Texas) is getting geared up for a run at the Texas Class 5A state championship, the Highlanders might also get an extra gift along the way - a potential national championship. The Woodlands stands two wins away from a regional championship and a spot in the state’s final four. With that success, the Highlanders are again ranked No. 1 in this week’s USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25, released by the Association Thursday afternoon.

The Woodlands improved to 40-0 and moved into the regional finals with a best-of-three series sweep of Belton. Paige McDuffee earned Max Preps/NFCA National Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, as she continued her domination in the circle. The Woodlands will face highly-touted Tomball in this week’s regional final.

Hoping for a stumble from The Woodlands is No. 2 Canyon del Oro (Tucson, Arizona). Coach Kelly Fowler’s club has already captured the Arizona Class 4A, Division I state championship, while finishing with a 34-1 overall record. Canyon del Oro appears poised to take over the top spot if The Woodlands fail to close the deal in Texas.

Meanwhile, Florida Class 3A state champion Gulliver Prep (Miami, Florida) remains third. No. 4 Plano (Plano, Texas) is still alive in the Texas state playoffs, while the Ghosts of No. 5 Kaukauna (Kaukauna, Wisconsin) check in at 22-0 – a first-ever spot in the nation’s top five.

The USA Today/NFCA Top 25 is compiled by state representatives from across the country. Records for this week’s poll include all games played through May 22, 2011.
