STARKVILLE, Miss. - Many high school teams are nearing the finish line of potential state championship runs. A trio of unbeaten teams from three different states leads the way as the USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25 heads down the stretch for 2011. The Woodlands (Woodlands, Texas) remains No. 1 for a seventh straight poll in the weekly rankings, released Thursday by the Association.
The Woodlands advanced to the regional quarterfinals with a pair of wins over Pflugerville. No. 2 Alexander Central (Taylorsville, North Carolina) continued to prep for the postseason with a pair of victories over Foard and Central Davidson. Meanwhile in Florida, the state semifinals are this weekend. The field includes No. 3 East Lake (Tarpon Springs, Florida) who stands two wins away from a state championship. However, No. 8 Bartow (Bartow, Florida) is up next for the Eagles.
Other states are also involved in postseason play. No. 4 Plano (Plano, Texas) is in the regional quarterfinals. No. 5 Canyon del Oro (Tucson, Arizona) has already advanced to the second round in its state tournament competition. Elsewhere, the poll does include some states, which have already put 2011 in the books. Ranked state champions include Louisiana Class 5A state champion Hahnville at No. 15.
The USA Today/NFCA Top 25 is compiled by state representatives from across the country. Records for this week’s poll include all games played through May 8, 2011.
