Viera, Fla. -- June 27, 2020 marked the debut ofThis Is Us, a team made up of former Scrap Yard Dawgs players, who walked out on their former organization on June 21.

Within a few days time, the group of athletes, using their own resources, rebranded themselves into a unit known simply as This Is Us. In addition to stepping back on the softball field, players are utilizing their platforms to raise awareness, empower young women, and unite the softball community.

Sporting their new jerseys, This Is Us players returned to the field on Saturday night for a contest against USSSA Pride (a 3-1 This Is Us victory). Reflecting their new team branding on the front, the backs of the jerseys gained attention for one particular reason: Each of the players’ nameplates displayed the surname of a current or former black softball player.

The group of represented players included some of softball’s all-time greats: India Chiles, Elantra Cox, Breanna Dozier, Peaches James, MJ & Shay Knighten, Iyhia McMichael, Michelle Moultrie, Nerissa Myers, Shannon Rhodes, Kiki Stokes, Tori Tyson, Olivia Watkins, Natasha Watley and Kayla Winkfield.

This Is Us has started a donation drive to cover expenses associated with training and playing in July, including housing, transportation (cars & gas) and possible flights.
