Tragedy struck the NCAA Division III Softball Championship late Friday afternoon when John Wells, assistant coach for Muskingum College with 41 years in the sport as a player and coach, collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack while pitching batting practice. The Muskies were preparing for their winner's bracket semifinal game against St. Mary's, which they went on to win, 2-0.

Muskingum College President Anne C. Steele informed the College community of Wells' passing.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of John Wells," Steele said. "John was a superb coach and a long-standing and trusted friend of the college. He will be sorely missed. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Jane and their enitre family."
