LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Trine’s Carly Searles and Tufts’ Allyson Fournier have been selected as the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Searles, a senior center fielder and leadoff batter from Levering, Mich., was a perfect 14-for-14 at the plate for the (31-2) Thunder this past week, with 11 runs, three doubles, a triple, homer, two walks, three steals, six runs batted in — everything but a partridge in a pear tree. Her streak of hits in 15 straight at bats (which she extended to 16 before it ended on Tuesday) was the second-longest run in any division in NCAA history. Naturally, her final hit in the stretch was her 48th career triple, which puts her three from tying the NCAA all-divisions record.
Meanwhile, Fournier continued her dominance for the two-time defending national champion (29-0) Jumbos, earning her third national honor in the past six weeks.
The senior right-hander from South Windsor, Conn., was 5-0 for the week, with a 0.00 earned-run average, four hits, two walks and 45 strikeouts over 19 innings. She started her week with her second straight perfect game, fanning 12 in a five-inning victory over Bridgewater State, and also tossed five-inning two-hit and one-hit shutouts (combined 22 strikeouts) against Trinity. Fournier allowed one hit and fanned 11 over four innings of relief against Bowdoin.
The perfect game was her sixth, one short of the Division III record of seven held by Salisbury's Rachel Johnson (her 14th no-hitter overall) and left Fournier one from tying Johnson and former University of Texas star Cat Osterman for the all-divisions perfect game record.
