Jessica Mendoza's two-out RBI-double in the top of the seventh inning drove home Leah O'Brien-Amico with the game's only run as USA defeated Japan 1-0 to win the Gold Medal at the 2002 U.S. Cup. Japan finished with the Silver Medal, while Australia defeated China 1-0 to earn the Bronze Medal. Canada placed fifth in the five-team tournament held July 4-7 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

USA posted a 4-1 record at the U.S. Cup and avenged a 6-1 loss to Japan, which went undefeated in round-robin play.

USA, along with U.S. Cup participants Australia, Canada and China, will compete in the Canada Cup July 13-21 at Surrey, British Columbia.
