The University of Washington president addressed athletic concerns at his university during a late-afternoon press conference Tuesday, April 27. Besides discussion of the football program and violations reported to Pac-10 and to the NCAA concerning Final Four betting pools and some recruiting violations related to boat rides, President Lee Huntsman released the findings from a UW investigation into the softball program.

The president requested that an investigative panel review the softball program last October. The investigation was prompted by an inquiry of the Washington State Department of Health into a complaint that Dr. William Scheyer and former assistant athletic trainer Craig Moriwaki inappropriately distributed medication to some Washington student-athletes.

In addition, Mr. Huntsman claimed that the softball coaching staff should have known that Dr. Scheyer and Moriwake overused medications and that there were credible concerns about the quality of medical care that the two provided to the Washington student-athletes.

Huntsman also said Washington athletic administrators should have known about the problem.

Huntsman also discussed the self-reporting of a violation of the 20-hour rule (NCAA Bylaw 17.1.5.1) by the softball program.

On Monday, April 26, former Washington coach Teresa Wilson filed a lawsuit against the university alleging sex discrimination under federal and state statutes, violation of due process and liberty rights, wrongful discharge and breach of contract.
