Chez Sievers singled up the middle to score Gardner and put the Longhorns up by one in the top of the first. Cat Osterman came out much stronger in her second game of the day against UCLA allowing only three hits through the fifth inning and striking out 13. UCLA pitcher Keira Goerl followed suit allowing only three hits through five innings, but was much weaker with the K's with only three during the game. However, UCLA rallied in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Monique Mejia, a sacrifice bunt from Andrea Duran, and an RBI double from Natasha Watley to tie the game, and an RBI single from Caitlin Benyi to give the Bruins the win.
Texas was eliminated. UCLA will meet California at 3:30 p.m. CDT on Monday for the championship game.
WHAT THEY SAID
"I'm just thrilled. It says so much about the team and their ability to never give up. I'm thrilled that everyone got to see what Bruin softball is all about."
"I'm not surprised that they pitched to me because I had struck out at all my other at-bats. When (Connie Clark) came out to talk to (Cat Osterman) I thought they would walk me. I just wanted to put it in play."
"I just wanted to put the ball in play, especially with Natasha on second."
"You don't go into a game expecting the other team to score in the first inning, but it happened and we came back."
"I thought we had a great tournament and I'm very, very proud of this team. It teaches a lot about life because it was pretty cruel there at the end. Cat's been phenominal. I'm so happy she's on our side. There's no doubt that we will be back. Hopefully next time we'll seal the deal. We did some good things and made some good adjustments. I thought one run was going to do it, but it was nice to put up insurance runs." ON PITCHING TO NATASHA WATLEY: "I didn't ever think of walking Natasha because you never want to put the go-ahead run on for free."
"I'm really happy with how I pitched. It's tough for any team to beat me twice. My game plan is to go right at them. I'm really pleased; I'm disappointed with the last two pitches, obviously. Our team has a lot of heart. We've done above and beyond waht a lot of people thought we could do."
