LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Pace’s (Fla.) Jayden Heavener, Medina’s (Texas) Hallie Kunz and Greenway’s (Phoenix, Ariz.) Kaitlyn Terry earned the first MaxPreps / NFCA National High School Player of the Week honors of the 2023 spring season. The trio garnered recognition for games played Feb. 20-26.

South Region

Heavener was nearly perfect over her first two starts and 12 innings of work in 2023. The junior southpaw struck out 32 of the 40 batters she faced, did not surrender a hit and walked two. Heavener opened the season with a five-inning perfect game, fanning all 15 batters she faced against Navarro. She followed that with a 17-strikeout no-hitter versus Fort Walton Beach. Only three batters reached base safely courtesy of two walks and one Pace error.

South Central Region

Kunz keyed Medina to a 5-0 week, going a perfect 13-for-13 at the plate and reaching base safely in all 15 plate appearances. She recorded four doubles, two triples, a home run, 10 RBI and 13 runs scored. Kunz slugged 1.846 and posted a 2.846 OPS. She went 3-for-3 against La Pryor, Brooks Collegiate and Leakey, registering four RBI versus Brooks Collegiate and homering against Leakey. The sophomore scored three times against New Braunfels Christian and twice in each of the other four contests. 

West Region

Terry posted a 5-0 mark, tossing 37.1 scoreless innings and fanning 97 batters in Greenway’s first week of the season. She twirled four complete-game shutouts and added 9.1 more innings of shutout relief. Terry fanned at least 10 batters in each appearance, with a pair of 19 strikeout efforts against Liberty and Horizon, respectively. The senior hurler added 18 more punchouts versus Centennial in game one of a twinbill and 17 in a six-inning relief outing versus Xavier. For the week, she allowed just seven hits and walked two batters, holding her opposition to a .056 batting average.

Winners are announced on NFCA.orgNFCA.org every Monday during the spring campaign with a player from each of five separate MaxPreps’ high school regions being selected.
