LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Seward’s (N.Y.) Kaitlin Stolowski, Lemont’s (Ill.) Sage Mardjetko, West Stanly’s (N.C.) Lily Huneycutt, Lake Creek’s (Texas) Ava Brown and Chugiak’s (Alaska) Megan Traxinger were named 2023 MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of the Week. The quintet garnered recognition for games played May 29-June 4.
East Region
Stolowski batted .800 (8-for-10) and slugged 1.900 with a double, two triples, two home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored in a pair of wins last week. She hit for the cycle (5-for-5) with two homers, five RBI and four runs scored against Friends Academy. Stolowski notched three hits with a triple, driving in and scoring two runs versus Tuckahoe.
North Region
Mardjetko twirled a pair of shutouts, including a no-hitter, and struck out 36 batters. In a near perfect game against Joliet Catholic, she fanned 18 and allowed only one base runner via a walk. Mardjetko followed up with another 18-strikeout performance versus Ottawa. Against the Pirates, she surrendered one base hit and walked two in the complete-game effort.
South Region
Huneycutt was key in West Stanly’s two victories over Midway to collect its fourth straight North Carolina 2A state crown She recorded a one-hit six-inning shutout in the clincher, fanning 11 Raiders and walking one. Additionally, the senior hurler went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. In game one, Huneycutt allowed a pair of unearned runs and in a five-hit complete game. She struck out four and walked four.
South Central Region
Brown tossed a pair of complete-game shutouts lifting Lake Creek to its second straight Texas 5A state title and the 84th win in the program’s last 85 games. In the semifinal win over Heritage, Brown scattered three hits, struck out 11 and walked one. A day later in the title game versus Canyon, she twirled a one-hit shutout with 15 punchouts and one walk. Offensively, she drove in two runs in the semifinal and added a double and RBI in the championship.
West Region
Traxinger batted .833 (10-for-12) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, six RBI and 10 runs scored over a four-game stretch last week. She posted four multi-hit games, including a pair with three base knocks to go along with a 1.750 slugging percentage. Traxinger belted both her homers. drove in five runs and scored three times against West Valley. The senior added a three-hit (3-for-4, RBI, 2 R) outing in which she was a home run short of the cycle versus Colony and scored four runs and added a pair of doubles against Service.
