Barbers Hill High School topped the field at the 2021 NFCA Texas High School Leadoff, March 18-20 in Bryan and College Station, Texas. The Eagles, who are currently ranked 18th in the USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25, posted a perfect 6-0 mark, registering two wins on each day of the tournament.

Deer Park High School and Cypress Woods High School put fourth 5-1 showings, while host Bryan High School, Cypress Fair High School, Lake Belton High School and Woodlands High School each closed out the tourney at 4-2.

Barbers Hill’s pitching staff twirled five shutouts and allowed just two runs during its unblemished run through the tournament. After Thursday’s opening-day wins over Langham Creek (9-0) and Bridgeland (9-2), the Eagles rattled off four straight shutouts against, Klein Cain (4-0), Cypress Ranch (1-0), Seven Lakes (1-0) and Cypress Fair (10-0).

Deer Park’s offense put up 69 runs and opened play with five straight wins over Woodlands (8-1), Cypress Fair (20-1), Langham Creek (12-5), Bridgeland (4-0) and Willis (22-0) before being edged by the other 5-1 squad Cypress Woods (4-3). After splitting their opening contests on day one, the previously-mentioned Wildcats, went on to win their final four games against Lake Belton (13-0), Temple (15-0), Deer Park and Brazoswood (7-5).

This marked the 25th year of the tournament hosted by Bryan High School head coach Enrique Luna. The previously-named Bryan-College Station Tournament was renamed in 2019 when Luna, who is the current high school representative on the NFCA Board of Directors, partnered with the NFCA.

Next year’s tournament dates are already set and will take place Feb. 17-19.
