LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Clemson’s Valerie Cagle and George Mason’s Aly Rayle earned 2023 Division I Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week honors. The duo is being recognized for their outstanding performances during the week of March 20-26.
Rayle twirled her second no-hitter in the span of one month, blanking A-10 foe Rhode Island on March 25. In that outing, the graduate hurler, fanned a season-best 11 batters. She followed up that performance with a second consecutive shutout (three-hitter) in which Rayle fanned 10 more Rams (no walks) and carried a perfect game through two outs into the fifth before surrendering her first hit of the weekend. In three starts, Rayle finished the week 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA, 26 strikeouts, four walks and six hits over 18 innings of work.
Cagle powered the fifth-ranked Tigers to a three-game sweep of Georgia Tech in Atlantic Coast Conference action. Homering in each contest, Cagle hit .571 with five RBI, four runs scored and a 1.857 slugging percentage. She drew three walks and was plunked, contributing to a .727 on-base percentage. Additionally, she was 2-0 in the circle with a 0.78 ERA, striking out 12 and walking four in nine innings of work. The junior hurler drove in two runs in game one and three, while fanning nine batters over four innings in the opener.
