LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Wichita State’s Addison Barnard and USC Upstate’s Hannah Houge were named Division I Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The duo is being recognized for their outstanding play for the week of March 28-April 3.
Barnard clubbed her way to a monstrous week at the plate, launching five home runs and driving in 14 runs. With her power surge, Barnard catapulted into the NCAA Division I home run lead with 18. The sophomore outfielder, who hit .500 (6-for-12) and slugged 1.833, added a double, five runs scored and a .533 on-base percentage. Barnard lifted the Shockers to a three-game sweep of Tulsa, seeing her register consecutive two-homer contests in games two (6 RBI, 2 R) and three (5 RBI, 2 R).
Houge did not allow a run and fanned 31 batters over 20 innings of work last week. Adding three more shutouts to her resume, Houge ranks second in Division I with 10. The senior hurler opened with a mid-week blanking of ETSU in which she surrendered three hits and struck out 12. Houge added 12 more punchouts in the Big South series opener, a one-hit shutout, versus Winthrop. For the week, she scattered seven hits and walked just one batter, holding her opposition to a .111 batting average.
The Division I Player & Pitcher of Week awards must be nominated by member head coaches and are voted on by the NFCA's Division I Top 25 Committee, which consists of one head coach representing each of the 32 NCAA DI Conferences.
