LOUISVILLE, Ky. –Iowa State Sami Williams and Washington’s Gabbie Plain were selected DI Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The duo was honored for their play during the week of Feb. 22-28.
Williams had a monstrous week for the Cyclones, who were nationally ranked for the first time in program history. Over five games, she hit .611 (11-for-18) with five home runs, 11 RBI and 10 runs scored, while slugging 1.444 and owning a .632 on-base percentage. The senior shortstop posted five multi-hit contests, which included a pair of two-homer games. Williams went 3-for-3 with two long balls and three RBI at then-No. 13 Arizona State and homered twice and drove in five runs versus Portland State. The Laguna Niguel, Calif. native also left the yard and scored three times against Grand Canyon.
Plain continues to rack up big strikeout totals through the first three weeks of the season. The senior righty went 3-0 with a 0.34 ERA and 36 strikeouts over 20.2 innings of work. She posted one shutout and held her opponents to a .091 batting average. In two starts at San Diego State, Plain fanned 12 and 13 batters. It marked her fourth and fifth double-digit strikeout performances of the season. She currently ranks second in Division I with 95 strikeouts. The Harrington Park, Australia native notched a two-hit shutout in the second start against the Aztecs and also tossed five innings of shutout ball against the University of San Diego.
