LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Anderson’s Kayson Boatner and St. Mary’s Catalina Cavazos were named 2023 Division II Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their outstanding performances for contests played Jan. 30-Feb. 5.
Boatner, the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA Player of the Year, picked up right where she left off, belting six home runs and driving in 20 runs keying No. 14 Anderson to six wins during the opening week of the 2023 season. She batted .824 (14-for17) with 10 extra-base hits, 14 runs scored, slugged 2.118 and reached base at an .850 clip. Boatner opened the season 7-for-8 with three long balls, six RBI and six runs in a twinbill sweep of USCB. She also homered against North Greenville and St. Augustine’s.
Cavazos opened the 2023 campaign 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA, tossing a no-hitter against No. 8 Central Oklahoma. She twirled three complete games, allowed an earned run, struck out 18 and walked just one in 21 innings of work. Against the Bronchos, Cavazos fanned four and issued her lone walk in the 2-0 victory. She fanned nine and allowed one run against Arkansas Tech and did not allow an earned run with five punchouts versus Cal Poly Humboldt.
