LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Valdosta State’s Abby Sulte and Charleson’s Brianna McCown were named Division II Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week for their outstanding performances for contests played Feb. 19-25.
Sulte powered her way to this week’s award, belting six home runs, at least one in all five contests, driving in 11 runs and scoring 12 times. She batted .533 with a 1.800 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage (five walks). In a doubleheader at Flagler, Sulte hit a two-run homer in each contest and finished with two RBI. The junior from St. Petersburg, Fla., went 6-for-9 (.667) with four homers, six runs scored and seven RBI in its Gulf South Conference series sweep at Lee. She left the yard twice and recorded three RBI in game two. Sulte added two RBI and one long ball in each of the other two matchups.
Highlighted by a perfect game, McCown posted a 4-0 record with a 0.85 ERA, 20 strikeouts and zero walks in 16.1 innings of work. Twirling her second perfecto as a Golden Eagle, McCown fanned 11 Pitt-Johnstown batters and did not allow a single base runner in the seven-inning complete game. In her other start, the native of Nitro, W.Va. went the distance against Seton Hill, surrendering a run on three hits with seven punchouts. McCown’s other two victories came in relief outings against both previously-mentioned opponents.
The above awards are voted on by the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll Committee, which features two member coaches from each of the NCAA’s eight regions.
