LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Angelo State’s Paxton Scheurer and Drury’s Kristina Bettis were named NFCA’s Division II Louisville Slugger Player and Wilson Pitcher of the Week. They are being recognized for their outstanding performances during contests played March 14-20.
Scheurer launched seven long balls and drove in 14 runs over six games last week for the Rambelles. She hit .545, doubled twice, slugged 1.591 and scored nine runs. Nine of her 12 hits went for extra bases. Scheurer left the yard three times, registered six RBI in an 11-8 win over UTPB, and also homered twice against Western New Mexico. The junior third baseman has four multi-homer games this season and currently leads Division II with 16 long balls, 50 RBI and a 1.114 slugging percentage.
Bettis posted a 4-0 mark with a 0.25 ERA, 31 strikeouts and five walks. Against Rockhurst, the junior hurler from Swansea, Ill. tossed the second no-hitter in program history, the last one coming 11 years ago. Bettis fanned six and walked one, facing just one batter over the minimum. She went the distance in her last three starts, earning complete-game victories over William Jewell (8 K), Emporia State (8 K) and Southwest Baptist (9 K).
The Division II Player and Pitcher of the Week awards are voted on by the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll Committee, which consists of two head coaches from each of the NCAA’s eight regions. To be eligible, student-athletes must be nominated by their member head coach.
