Type: drill
Setup: We run this drill at the end of practice. It’s a great competition between two teams and focuses on fielding slow rollers and stopped softballs.
Execution: Divide the players into two groups. Place half at the bag at second base and the other half at home plate. The group at second runs home, while the group at home runs to second base.
Place a ball approximately halfway between each base on or about the base path. On the coach’s mark, the girls sprint toward the first ball which they must handle with their glove. They round the next base and handle the next ball with their bare hand on their way to the final destination. The players wait at their final destination until all have run. Variations including running the opposite way or only allowing the glove or hand work for each time around. Focus on getting low, grinding the ball to get a grip, and using two hands to scoop with the glove.
