Type: drill
Purpose: A fun power-hitting drill to induce game-like pressure and can also be a conditioning drill.
Explanation: We start off with the hitters taking live pitching from a coach or pitcher, who throws good pitches to hit.
Every athlete gets one pitch, and wherever she hits it, she has to sprint to it. If she hits it to the fence, she has to sprint to the ball and sprint back. That’s the first round.
Then they all line up again and I give them a pitch, and they have to hit it to the fence, either a fly or hard ground ball. If it doesn’t hit the fence, the whole team owes me a foul pole. As we go, if somebody hits a home run, the number of foul poles goes back down to zero.
At the end, when we have the number of foul poles ready, we go double-or- nothing. The team picks the girl it thinks is hottest right now, and she gets three pitches and has to hit two out of the park. If she hits it out, they don’t have to run.
This drill is a major motivational tool, and it usually brings the athletes up to the challenge.
