Type: drill

Objective: I use this drill to help develop the mechanics of our infielders and outfielders. It is very good in helping develop relays to home plate.

Setup: We divide the teams into two groups. One group lines up behind third base, while the other group lines up in deep right-center field.

Execution: I have an assistant coach acting as my catcher as I hit hard ground balls to the first player in the line at third base. She fields the ball and quickly makes a sharp throw to home plate.

After the throw I then hit a deep fly ball to the first in line in center field. As the player sprints to catch the ball, the fielder that was at third base sprints to a relay position for the throw to home plate.

The cycle repeats as the infielder that was the relay goes to the rear of the line in the outfield. The outfielder that caught and threw the ball to the relay then joins the line of infielders.

The location of groups can be moved, relay bases can be changed, and you can add a first baseman as an option for infielders to throw to.

Change it up every practice, but continue the full cycle until the team can properly make every catch, throw and relay without an error.
