Categories: Base Running Situational Defense Hitting
Type: drill
Purpose: To give your team lots of repetitions and looks in a short amout of time.
Explanation: Tosser/pitcher is pitching the ball to a hitter who
carries out three rounds of batting practice. defense plays out all batted balls from home plate hitter and baserunner. in between pitched balls, coaches on sidelines will fungo balls to fielders so that everyone is getting reps and there is minimal standing around.
Rules: 1. Players pair up in two’s. One hitter and one baserunner play out all three rounds on batted ball. Baserunner returns to run each base independently. (Ex.: if runner starts on 1B and player bunts, runner may go 1B to 3B, but after play is complete, runner needs to return and run next play from 2B.)
2. Defense always plays out batted ball from home plate and baserunner.
3. Sideline fungo hitters hit in between home plate-hit balls to players not involved in defensive play. Balls are returned to sideline buckets on same side of field. (Ex.” right side of infield returns balls to right sidleine bucket to avoid cross-field throwing.)
4. Pitcher/coach calls “ball” when about to toss ball to home plate batter to get attention of defensive players.
5. Baserunner starts at 1B for beginning of each round.
6. Round 1: sac, slap squeeze; round 2: hit/run, drive ball, fly ball; round 3: 5 swings to score runner
*The time between the live ball and fungo can be adjusted depend- ing on what you want to emphasize, offensive or defensive reps.
