Categories: Hitting
Type: drill
Purpose: To work on the execution of situational hitting, for both the batter and base runners.
Explanation: During our hitting stations on our field we use our situational hitting drill. This drill has three to four student-athletes involved and each athlete starts at a base. The drill can be performed off a batting machine or a live pitcher.
Sequence goes as follow:
1st pitch: Batter sacrifice bunts. Runner works on secondary lead off first base.
2nd pitch: Batter sacrifice bunts. Runner works on secondary lead off first base.
3rd pitch: Batter performs a hit and run. Runner advances to second.
4th pitch: Batter hits behind the runner. Runner advances to third.
5th pitch: Batter executes a sacrifice fly. Runner tags and advances to home.
6th pitch: Batter executes a squeeze play. Runner executes timing of the squeeze play.
We use this everyday in our hitting stations. We feel the execution of these plays is critical in our offensive attack. You can add or subtract different situational hitting such as surprise bunts, double bunts, push bunts, etc. We perform two rounds of this, and in the third round, we allow our athletes to work on hitting to all fields.
