LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bloomfield’s (N.Y.) Ashlyn Wright, Rossville’s (Ind.) Avery Layton, Fort Chiswell’s (Va.) Lilly Goforth, Perry-Lecompton’s (Kan.) Taylor Damme and Capital’s (Mont.) Kathryn Emmert were named MaxPreps / NFCA National High School Players of the Week for games played May 6-12.

Wright struck out 61 batters over 27 innings and four wins. The junior scattered nine hits and walked just two as the Bombers gave her plenty of offensive support, outscoring their opponents 52-0. Wright fanned 11 or more in every game, including 17 twice. She also helped herself at the plate, going 4-for-9 (.444) with seven runs scored, two doubles, two triples and five RBI.

Layton struck out 14 and walked two in a five-inning no-hitter against Clinton Prairie in her lone start in the circle, to lower her ERA to 0.92. The junior, who has a 7.7-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, also excelled on offense for the Hornets, hitting .400 (2-for-5) with three runs and three RBI. For the season, Layton is batting .452 with eight doubles, five homers and 41 RBI.

Goforth was a perfect 7-for-7 (1.000) for the Pioneers, with six runs, a double, homer and seven RBI in two contests. The freshman had three hits, including a triple, against Bland County and added four more hits, including a homer, versus Grayson County.

Damme hit .875 (7-for-8) with seven runs, a double, triple, three homers and eight RBI. The senior had three multi-hit games, including two hits in a pair of victories over Anderson County and a 3-for-3 day with a double, homer and four RBI against Jefferson County North. She hit two longballs and drove in three in the second contest versus Anderson.

Emmert fanned 30 and didn’t allow a single walk while scattering eight hits over 12 innings and two starts the circle. The senior tossed a five-inning, three-hitter (13 strikeouts) against Butte and a five-hitter (17 strikeouts) versus Helena. Emmert also contributed at the plate in a game against Hellgate, going 1-for-2 with two runs, a double and two RBI.
