BRYAN, Texas — Alvin High completed an undefeated 6-0 run through the NFCA Texas High School Leadoff Classic to capture the 28th edition of the long-running event held Feb. 15-17 in the adjacent cities of Bryan and College Station, Texas.
The Yellowjackets beat Clear Springs High, 8-3, in Saturday night’s championship game at Travis Midtown Park, after defeating Angleton, 7-3 in the semifinals earlier in the day. Clear Springs reached the Texas High School Leadoff final for the second consecutive season with a 6-1 victory over Rockwall.
Alvin beat both Humble Kingwood Park (8-5) and Humble Kingwood (1-0) on Friday, and opened tournament play on Thursday with a 22-5 rout of El Paso Pebble Hill and a 9-1 triumph over Georgetown.
Clear Springs’ perfect run to the championship game included wins over El Paso Mountwood (5-0) and Argyle (13-3) on Thursday, and victories over Waller (4-1) and Lucas Lovejoy (12-4) on Friday.
Angleton defeated Rockwall, 6-2, for third place, while Robinson won the consolation contest, 15-13 over Del Valle.
In all, there were 93 tournament teams, with 64 playing in the championship bracket. An additional 29 squads competed in a round-robin bracket, with College Station A&M Consolidated, Franklin, two-time reigning USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 national champion Lake Creek and Southlake Carroll all going undefeated in that division of the event.
The bracket division semifinals and finals (and the third-place game) were held at Travis Midtown Park, but tournament games were played on 21 area fields at five high schools and four softball complexes. The quintet of high school locations were A&M Consolidated High, Bryan High, Caldwell High, College Station High and Rudder High. In addition to Travis, other complexes utilized were Bryan Regional Athletic, Steven C. Beachy Central Park and Veterans Park.
