Type: drill
Purpose: to work basic fundamentals of flips and throws
Explanation: One catcher stands at home plate with a bucket. The eight other defensive players spread out equally between home and first base with two balls. These are the rollers, and they face the dugout for right-handers and the infield for lefties.
One receiver facing the rollers works down the line using crab stops (not crossovers). The receivers field the rolled balls and use the “belly, ear, point and pull” fielding and throwing technique.
The first throws are flips, going down the line fielding the balls and flipping them back to the rollers. They then will field and use touch throws until far enough down the line. On the return from first back to home they use flips for the last one or two throws.
We want the players to focus on bending the knees and keeping the feet and shoulders pointed at the target.
