Type: Drill
Purpose: For infielders and catchers to work on receiving throws from the outfield, and outfielders to work on throws to different bases.
Equipment Needed:
Bucket of balls to the left and right of the pitcher's mound, fungo hitters
Explanation:
The drill starts with a fly ball to rightfield and one to centerfield or leftfield from the fungo hitters. The rightfielder works on various balls, one-hop, grounders, line-drives, etc.
After fielding the ball, the rightfielder makes the throw to first base. The first baseman throws the ball to the fungo hitter. In left or center the throws will go to the infield. We have the third baseman receive throws from the outfield and cover her base while working on footwork, swipe tags, etc. After the tag is applied, the third baseman fires home to the catcher.
The catcher is in a stance and readies herself to fire to second base (shortstop covering); the catcher works on technique and accuracy while the shortstop has the opportunity to practice applying the tag. Start the drill over with five to six repetitions apiece. Players can switch positions accordingly.
