Type: drill

Purpose: Work on sacrifice and suicide bunts in pressure situations

Explanation: Everyone on the team lines up on the first base line. Our pitchers do not hit, but they participate in the running part. Each person in line will step into the batter’s box. The coach or whoever throws batting practice will throw them a pitch.

Rounds 1 & 2: Sacrifice Bunts – Each hitter has one strike to get a sacrifice bunt down between the cones and outside of the catcher’s area. If they make it, they go to the end of the line and the next person in line is up. If they bunt at a ball, miss the pitch, pop-up or bunt it outside of the boundary area, everyone sprints to second-third baseline and back. We go through the line twice doing sacrifices. If they get three consecutive bunts down, they get a free pass on their sprint. they can and hopefully will accumulate these.

Round 3: Suicide Bunts – Each hitter gets one pitch. If they get the bunt down in fair territory and outside the catcher’s area or foul off a bad pitch, theygo to the end of the line. However if they miss or do not make an attempt, the team has a sprint. Also if they do not bunt a strike in fair territory, they have a sprint. There are no freebies and we require those who do not get the suicides down to go again at the end.

This drill puts a little pressure on the athleties. The main conept is to work on bunting skills. They get fired up when they are successful and they realize how much impact one person can make on the whole team. On bad days, they are getting a good conditioing workout in. We do this drill at the end of practice at least twice a week.
