Type: drill

Objective: This is a drill that I have never seen anyone run. It is great for not only working on proper fielding technique, but it also helps with conditioning.

Execution: Line softballs up between first and second base in a straight line. Have the same number of players as softballs line up along the foul line between third base and home to act as receivers. The rest of the players line up to field and throw outside first base.

A player runs and uses proper fielding technique to field the first ball in the line. She then pivots and throws to the first receiver in line. When the receiver catches the ball, she sprints and puts the ball back in its original place and then sprints back to her place on the foul line.

The player fielding the ball continues in line to the next ball and throws it to the next receiver in line. That player runs and places the ball back and then sprints back into the line.

The player should field the balls and throw rapidly. When she fields the final ball, she then sprints to the end of the receiving line, and the first receiver now moves to the fielding line. The drill keeps going until the first fielder is back to her original spot.

Once the drill is finished, you can then move the balls between second and third and let your players work on fielding and throwing away from the body instead of across.
