Purpose: One of the drills that we do, often being indoors over the winter, is an Outfield Speed/Accuracy Throwing Drill. It is a way where we can simulate game speed working on outfield throws to second and/or third base.
Explanation:
We start with one middle infielder at second base to receive the throws from the outfielders. You can do this dril with the corner outfields down each foul line or the centerfielder in the gaps.
You place three balls in a line about five feet from each other and about 150 feet down the line from home plate. The outfielder starts about 10-15 feet behind the first ball. You take the rest of the team and start them at home as baserunners. When the baserunner takes off from home, the outfield can start after the first ball. The idea is as a baserunner you need to make it into second base before the thrid ball is caught at second base. the outfielder needs to grab the next ball and make the throw, and then finally make the third throw in time to tag out the runner.
You can adjust this by starting a runner at first base and making throws to third base, increase the distance the outfielder is starting from the balls or even the distance in between the three balls. This is also a good opportunity to work with the baserunners on proper footwork for legging out a double as well as working on some conditioning but keeping a competitive edge between the baserunners and fielders.
