Type: drill

Purpose: work on fundamentals of bunting, specifically having athletes place the ball in a specific spot. The other benefit of this workout can be use of your own pitchers and defensive players working on bunts.

in the dirt in front of home plate. in each section, write a number representing a point value based on what the coach considers the perfect bunt. It is best to use the two-foot diameter around home plate, extending out to first base, the pitcher’s circle and third base. Each girl bunts one ball and is awarded the point total for where her bunt lands.

After every player bunts, add up the point totals. After a couple of rounds, we start over and let the girls design the point values for the different areas. Again, this is a practice event where players are taking ownership in the activity. You can reward the girls with the highest individual point totals. You can also have the team working toward a total points goal, meaning each of the girls contributed with high-scoring bunts.

Practice can become more fun when it is turned into competition. it is very important for the players to feel like they are part of the practice routine, helping pick drills and games that are played.
