All-American Team Composition & Special Awards
1. Nominations
- Only NFCA member Head Coaches who have an active NFCA membership in good standing of institutions in the designated division may nominate for post-season awards.
- Any institution, coach, or athlete in the process of moving from one division to another shall remain eligible for NFCA awards for the current year in the existing division they are competing. The NFCA may award athletes and/or coaches at these institutions even if the institution is prohibited from championship play or conference awards, provided that the institution played the majority of its schedule in that particular division.
Who may be nominated
- Teams eligible for nomination must complete the minimum number of contests specified by their respective governing body to qualify for postseason competition.
- Coaches may nominate up to eight (8) players from their own team to the All-Region ballot
- Coaches may nominate more than one player for the same position.
- A player may only be nominated for one position.
- The nomination form must be completed in full to be considered.
- Only stats accrued v. countable competition in the specified division may be submitted for consideration.
- Only regular-season statistics may be included in the nomination. Postseason contests, including conference tournament games, may NOT be included.
2. Guidelines
Pitchers
- Must meet ONE of the following pieces of criteria to be nominated
- Must have recorded 100 IP OR
- Must have pitched 30% of the team's total innings pitched
- For example, if a team has a total of 300 IP in the season, a pitcher must have recorded 90 IP to be eligible for All-Region nomination using this criteria option.
- Pitching stats are the first consideration.
- Defensive stats are the second consideration.
- Offensive stats are the third consideration.
Defensive Positions (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF)
- Must have played 50% of the school's total games.
- Must have played 60% of the nominee's total games at the nominated position.
- Defensive and offensive statistics will have equal weight.
Utility/Pitcher
- Must have played at least 50% of the school's total games at two or more positions, with at least 33% of the total games being played at position(s) other than pitcher.
- The nominee must have pitched a minimum of 70 innings OR 25% of the team’s total innings pitched
- For example, if a team pitches 250 total innings, a nominee for the Utility/Pitcher category must have recorded a minimum of 63 IP to be eligible for All-Region nomination in the Utility/Pitcher category.
- Defensive and offensive statistics will have equal weight.
- Defensive stats for each position played must be provided (except for DP).
DP or Utility/Non-Pitcher
- DP must have played a minimum of 50% of the school's total number of games at the DP position.
- Utility/non-pitcher must have played at least 50% of the school's total games at two or more positions, with no more than 59% of the individual’s total games being played at any one position.
- The nominee must not have pitched more than 24% of the team’s total innings pitched.
- For example, if a team pitches 300 total innings, a nominee must NOT exceed a total of 72 IP to be eligible for All-Region nomination in the DP and Utility/Non-Pitcher category.
- All statistics must be included.
- Defensive stats for each position played must be provided (except for DP).
NFCA All-Region Balloting (Voting) Procedures
3. Eligibility
- Only NFCA member Head Coaches who have an active NFCA membership in good standing may vote for the All-Region teams.
- Only one ballot per institution may be cast.
- Teams who did not have a competitive season this spring are still eligible to vote in the NFCA All-Region selections.
- The expectation is that ALL voters take the time to be knowledgeable about the nominees before casting their ballot. Please take the time to cast a well-informed ballot on behalf of your institution.
4. Procedures
- You must vote for your institution's nominees to remain eligible. Programs who have nominated student-athletes for all-region and do not cast a vote before the deadline will have their student-athletes removed from the ballot.
- Coaches cannot vote for their own players on the regional ballot.
- The voting ballot must be completely filled out. However, if fewer than the allotted number of nominees are on the ballot for a particular position, it's permissible to vote for less.
- The voting ballot will only be counted if submitted by the deadline.
5. All-Region Team Composition
- NCAA Division III will be awarded First, Second, and Third Team All-Region for each of the (10) NFCA regions provided that the membership percentage remains above 75% as of March 1 of a given year. Should membership fall below 75% by March 1 of a given year the Division III All-American Committee will reevaluate the number of current All-Region teams. Should membership fall below 50% by March 1 of a given year there will be a mandated decrease in the number of All-Region teams. (Example: Two All-Region teams for each of the 10 NFCA regions).
- First-team all-region will include three (3) pitchers, making for a total of 13 players recognized as first-team selections: three pitchers, one for each infield position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, SS, C), three outfielders, one utility/pitcher, and one DP or utility/non-pitcher.
- Each region’s second and third teams will be comprised of 12 players per team: two pitchers, one for each infield position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, SS, C), three outfielders, one utility/pitcher and one DP or utility/non-pitcher.
- Each region’s Third Team All-Region selections may have more than 12 players, as each Conference Player and/or Pitcher of the Year who were nominated and received votes will be added to Third Team All-Region if they were not awarded All-Region status through the voting process.
- If there is a tie, honors will be awarded to each player involved in the tie.
6. Additional Requirements
- All nominations must include a high-resolution color headshot photograph of the nominee and must be uploaded directly within the nomination.
- SIDs must use the supplied link to submit individual files or one precisely labeled file that is one-to-two minutes in length of video footage for each player selected to both the first and second all-region teams. Videos should be submitted no later than the Friday prior to Memorial Day.
- Each coach who has a first, second, or Third Team all-region player must submit or have the SID submit the following to his or her respective regional representative:
- Updated statistics, excluding conference tournament and regional statistics (if applicable).
- Updated game-by-game statistics for each player named to an all-region team, excluding conference tournament and regional statistics (if applicable).
7. Announcement of All-Region Teams
- NFCA All-Region teams will be released to the schools and will appear on the NFCA Website on the assigned release date.

8. Meeting
- Regional representatives meet via conference call to select the All-America First, Second, and Third Teams.
9. Eligibility
- Only players who were selected to All-Region teams are eligible for consideration at the All-American level.
- It is the responsibility of the player's coach to get updated statistics (including game-by-game) on his or her All-American candidate(s) to the regional representative prior to the selection meeting (see Additional Requirements above).
- Conference tournament and regional statistics should be excluded, if applicable.
- First, second, and third-team All-Region selections may be eligible for first, second or third-team All-America consideration;
- However, a region's first-team selection must be selected as an All-American prior to someone being moved up for consideration from the second team, and the same for a second-team honoree being selected before a third-team selection.
10. Process & Voting
- Order of Selection
- The selection process is done by position. Each of the three teams at a determined position is selected before the committee moves on to vote for another position.
- For example, if the committee is selecting pitchers, the committee members: a) vote in all the First Team pitchers, b) vote in all the Second Team pitchers, c) vote in all the Third Team pitchers, d) move on to the next position.
- The committee discusses each player on the ballot who has been brought forth for discussion by the regional representative as a potential first-team All-American.
- A vote is taken and the top vote-getter represents the First Team.
- The process is repeated for selection to the Second and Third Teams.
- In the event of a tie during the vote for First and Second Team members, the committee re-votes until the tie is broken.
- If there is a tie at the Third Team All-American level, all players involved in the tie are awarded.
- The selection process is done by position. Each of the three teams at a determined position is selected before the committee moves on to vote for another position.
- Process by Positions
- PITCHER (3 selections on each All-American team)
- Reps put forth legitimate First Team All-Region names for consideration & discuss
- Each Rep votes in ran k order for (3) nominees to get (1) selection on the First Team All-American. Additional discussion follows.
- This process is repeated until the First Team is filled.
- If the (3) First Team selections are from the same REGION, that regional Rep may bring their Second Team All-Region to the table for consideration. A Rep cannot bring forth a Second Team All-Region candidate until all 3 first-team pitchers from a respective region have been selected as All-Americans.
- Repeat the above procedure for Second Team AA & Third Team AA selections.
- Remaining nominees on the board will be added to the At-Large list.
- The Rawlings Gold Glove Pitcher will be selected.
- The AA Committee will review the Rawlings Gold Glove regional selections and determine one pitcher to be named as the Rawlings Gold Glove winner.
- Follow Gold Glove Procedures
- The AA Committee will review the Rawlings Gold Glove regional selections and determine one pitcher to be named as the Rawlings Gold Glove winner.
- UTILITY / PITCHER (1 selection on each team)
- Reps put forth legitimate First Team All-Region names for consideration & discuss
- Each Rep votes in rank order for (3) nominees to get (1) selection on the First Team All-American. Additional discussion follows.
- The regional Rep of the First Team selection now has the option to bring their Second Team All-Region to the table for consideration, since their First Team All-Region honoree was selected
- Repeat the above procedure for Second Team AA & Third Team AA selections.
- Remaining nominees on the board will be added to the At-Large list.
- OUTFIELD (3 selections on each team)
- Reps put forth legitimate First Team All-Region names for consideration & discuss.
- Each Rep votes in rank order for (3) nominees to get one selection on the First Team All-American. Additional discussion follows.
- This process is repeated until the First Team is filled.
- If the (3) First Team selections are from the same region, that regional Rep may bring their Second Team All-Region to the table for consideration. A Rep cannot bring forth a Second Team All-Region candidate until all 3 first-team outfielders from a respective region have been selected as All-Americans.
- Repeat the above procedure for Second Team AA & Third Team AA selections.
- Remaining nominees on the board will be added to the At-Large list.
- The Rawlings Gold Glove outfielder will be selected.
- The AA Committee will review the Rawlings Gold Glove regional outfielder selections and determine (1) left fielder, (1) center fielder, and (1) right fielder to be named as the Rawlings Gold Glove winners.
- Follow Gold Glove Procedures
- The AA Committee will review the Rawlings Gold Glove regional outfielder selections and determine (1) left fielder, (1) center fielder, and (1) right fielder to be named as the Rawlings Gold Glove winners.
- CATCHER / 1B / 2B / 3B / SHORTSTOP / DP-UTIL-NON-P (1 selection on each team)
- Reps put forth legitimate First Team All-Region names for consideration & discuss
- Each Rep votes in rank order for (3) nominees to get (1) selection on the First Team All-American. Additional discussion follows.
- The regional Rep of the First Team selection now has the option to bring their Second Team All-Region to the table for consideration, since their First Team All-Region honoree was selected
- Repeat the above procedure for Second Team AA & Third Team AA selections.
- Remaining nominees on the board will be added to the At-Large list.
- The AA Committee will review the Rawlings Gold Glove regional selections for C/1B/2B/3B/SS selections and determine one C/1B/2B/3B/SS to be named as the Rawlings Gold Glove winner.
- Follow Gold Glove Procedures
- The AA Committee will review the Rawlings Gold Glove regional selections for C/1B/2B/3B/SS selections and determine one C/1B/2B/3B/SS to be named as the Rawlings Gold Glove winner.
- AT-LARGE (5 selections on each team)
- Reps will use the list of selections on the board for All-American Second Team & discuss athletes for consideration to move up to First Team AA, At-Large
- In Pitcher and Outfield, the top vote getter is the candidate eligible to move up first
- Each Rep votes in rank order for (3) nominees to get one selection on the First Team, At-Large
- The Second Team AA vacancy will be replaced with the Third Team AA selection at that position.
- In Pitcher and Outfield, the top vote getter moves up first
- Open discussion is permitted and Reps can bring to the table new nominees for the Third Team AA position vacancy from the eligible list at that position.
- New submissions may be accepted at this time from the first-team All-Region candidates, or if a first-team All-Region candidate is already on an All-American team, the second-team All-Region candidate may be considered.
- Each Rep votes in rank order for (3) nominees to get one selection on the Third Team AA
- Steps 1-5 will be repeated until (5) First Team At-Large positions are filled
- Reps will use the list of selections on the board for All-American Third Team & discuss athletes for consideration to move up to Second Team AA, At-Large
- In Pitcher and Outfield, the top vote getter is the candidate eligible to move up first
- Each Rep votes in rank order for (3) nominees to get (1) selection on Second Team AA At-Large
- Open discussion is permitted and Reps can bring to the table new nominees for the Third Team AA position vacancy from the At-Large list at that position.
- New submissions may be accepted at this time from the first-team All-Region candidates, or if a first-team All-Region candidate is already on an All-American team, the second-team All-Region candidate may be considered.
- Each Rep votes in rank order for (3) nominees to get (1) selection on the Third Team AA
- Steps 1-5 will be repeated until (5) Second Team At-Large positions are filled
- Remaining athletes are included and open discussion is permitted. Reps can bring to the table new nominees for the Third Team AA position vacancy from the At-Large list at that position.
- New submissions may be accepted at this time from the first-team All-Region candidates, or if a first-team All-Region candidate is already on an All-American team, the second-team All-Region candidate may be considered.
- Each Rep votes in rank order for (3) nominees to get (1) selection for the Third Team At-Large AA
- Repeat to fill (5) At-Large spots
- If there is a tie for the final At-Large spot, the tied selections will both be added as Third Team At-Large AA
- Reps will use the list of selections on the board for All-American Second Team & discuss athletes for consideration to move up to First Team AA, At-Large
- PITCHER (3 selections on each All-American team)
- NCAA Division III will be awarded First, Second, and Third Team All-American provided the membership percentage remains above 75% as of March 1 of a given year. Should membership fall below 75% by March 1 of a given year the Division III All-American Committee will reevaluate the number of current All-American teams. Should membership fall below 50% by March 1 of a given year there will be a mandated decrease in the number of All-American Teams. (Example: Two All-American teams).
- Each All-American team is comprised of 18 players:
- three pitchers, one catcher, one first base, one second base, one third base, one shortstop, three outfielders, one utility/pitcher, one utility/non-pitcher, and five at-large positions.
- At-large positions are nominated by the regional representatives.

2. Special Awards
- Diamond Sports / NFCA Catcher of the Year
- The athlete nominated and selected as the First Team All-American Catcher. The athlete must have played 50 percent of the school’s total games at the nominated position. Defensive and offensive statistics will have equal weight on the selection process. Selected by the All-American committee.
- New Balance / NFCA Golden Shoe Award
- Most prolific base stealer when accounting for strength of schedule and other statistical categories. The athlete must be nominated for All-Region to be considered. Selected by the All-American committee.
- NFCA Player of the Year
- A First Team All-American selected based on statistical analysis. Selected by the All-American committee.
- NFCA Pitcher of the Year
- NFCA Pitcher of the Year will be the first pitcher selection to the All-American team or the first-team All-American UT/P. Stats that may be considered: Pitching stats, defensive stats, offensive stats. Selected by the All-American committee.
- NFCA Freshman of the Year
- A nominated freshman in their first year of collegiate competition (Freshman or Red-Shirt Freshman) selected based on statistical analysis. Selected by the All-American committee. Nominees are not required to meet All-Region criteria.
- Rawlings / NFCA Gold Glove Award
- The nine top defensive players, one per position (P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF), are recognized with the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, presented by the NFCA. Selected by the All-American committee.
3. Announcement of All-American Teams
- The three All-American teams will be prior to the start of the NCAA Division III National Championships.
