Florida Southern College, who returns seven starting position players and all three pitchers from last season's national runner-up team, is ranked No. 1 in the preseason National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll, released Wednesday by the association.
The Mocs, 52-8 and champions of the Sunshine State Conference a year ago under head coach Chris Bellotto, will be led by sophomore pitcher Megan Brown. Brown was 36-5 last season, compiling a stelar ERA of 0.44 while striking out 263 batters.
At the plate, fellow sophomore Sarah Kohlbrenner returns after a 2004 campaign that saw her hit at a .391 clip that included nine doubles, 10 triples and 64 RBIs. In addition Kohlbrenner hit five home runs and was 24-for-28 on the basepaths.
Kennesaw State, which spent most of last season ranked No. 1, opens the season as the nation's No. 2 team. The defending Peach Belt Conference champions return eight position players and four pitchers from last year's 64-6 squad.
Despite the loss of All-American Lisa Macki in the circle, the Owls return a pair of 20-game winners in Janet Kearns and Tara Hrycuik. All-American catcher Cambria McKay, who hit 20 home runs and delivered 71 RBIs last season returns along with .421 hitter Amy Middleton.
Shippensburg returns Honda Award nominee Kelley Tiesi and checks in at No. 3. St. Cloud State, the surprise of last season that finished third at the national tournament is fourth while Northern Kentucky returns All-American pitcher Krystal Lewallen and rounds out the top five.
Alabama-Huntsville begins the season ranked No. 6. One of the most powerful hitting teams in the nation, the Chargers are up six spots from last year's final poll. Colorado-Colorado Springs, who returns Diamond Catcher of the Year Crystal Krebs, a .511 hitter last season, is ranked seventh.
Humboldt State is ranked eighth, followed by defending Northeast region champion Caldwell and Peach Belt power North Florida, who share the ninth spot.
Perennial power St. Mary''s (Texas) is 11th, followed by Bloomsburg, San Francisco State and Grand Valley State. Defending national champion Angelo State lost 11 players from last season and begins the season ranked 15th.
Missouri Western checks in at No. 16, followed by Rollins, LeMoyne, Emporia State and Lewis.
The last five ranked teams are Presbyterian, West Florida, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Texas Woman's and Lock Haven.
