LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Old Colony RVT’s (Mass.) Kayleigh DeSousa, Brodhead’s (Wisc.) Ava Risum, Crystal River’s (Fla.) Violet Flynn, Central’s (Mo.) Kaydence Cosby and Viewpoint’s (Calif.) Emjay Peck were named MaxPreps / NFCA National High School Players of the Week for games played April 22-28.
In two games last week, DeSousa went 8-for-9 (.889) and reached base in 11 of 12 plate appearances (.917 OBP). She recorded four doubles, a home run, three walks, 12 RBI and nine runs scored. Against Bristol County Agricultural, DeSousa was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a long ball, seven RBI, six runs scored and three free passes. She also went 4-for-5 with two more doubles, five RBI and three runs versus Cape Cod RVT.
Risum posted a 3-0 record, twirling a no-hitter and two one-hit shutouts. She struck out 34, walked two and surrendered just two hits over 17 innings of work. Risum no-hit Edgerton with 12 strikeouts and one walk in a five-inning win. The junior hurler continued her dominance holding Evansville (5 IP) and Turner to one hit apiece with 12 and 10 strikeouts, respectively. Risum also helped herself out at the plate, batting .667 (6-for-9) with four doubles, five RBI and six runs scored.
Flynn keyed Crystal River to three victories last week, tossing a pair of no-hitters, including a perfect game, while also driving in 10 runs at the plate. The sophomore righty’s perfect game came in her final start of the week against Zephyrhills as she struck out 12 of the 15 batters she faced in a five-inning win. Flynn also blanked Dunnellon, fanning 19 and issuing a pair of free passes during a 3-0 triumph. She finished the week, 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 44 strikeouts and three walks in 17 innings, while going six-for-nine at the plate with two doubles, a home run and five runs scored.
In three games, Cosby was 7-for-8 (.875) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs and nine RBI. She scored six runs, drew three walks, reached base at a .917 clip and slugged 2.250. The junior matched a season high with six RBI against West County. Against the Bulldogs, Cosby was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and long ball. She homered and drove in three runs against Steelville and also notched a pair of doubles and two runs scored versus Scott City.
Peck did not surrender a hit or run, struck out 28 of the 32 batters she faced, and allowed just two baserunners in a pair of no-hitters (one perfect game) last week. The sophomore hurler fanned all 15 batters in her perfect game against Brentwood School. Peck also held Crossroad without a hit, struck out 13 and issued a pair of walks. Additionally, she was a perfect 7-for-7 at the plate, six of which were doubles, with five RBI and seven runs scored.
