LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Unbeaten Melissa routed Wakeland 10-0 last Friday to continue its march through the Texas UIL Class 5A playoffs, and remain atop the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll for a ninth week.
The (32-0) Cardinals play a best-of-three series with Midlothian next in the Division 1 regional semifinal round.
Meanwhile, No. 2 Calvary Baptist (37-1) wrapped up its fifth consecutive Louisiana state championship on Saturday, routing D’Arbonne Woods 12-0 in the Division III Select final, after edging Parkview Baptist, 1-0 in Friday’s state semifinal.
Summerville (27-0) and Katy (36-1) remained third and fourth, respectively, while Lake Creek (31-0), Bishop O’Connell (15-0), Donovan Catholic (19-0), Lincoln-Way Central (20-1) and Doral Academy (26-1) all moved up in the rankings this week. Owyhee (24-1) snapped its 23-game win streak and slipped two spots, but still stayed in the top 10.
Unbeaten Ridgeview and Kingsway (both 19-0) made their poll debuts at No. 14 and 21, while Louisiana state titlist Sam Houston (32-2) is also new at No. 17 after running its win streak to 30 with a 3-2 triumph over Dutchtown in Saturday’s Division I Non-Select championship.
State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.
