LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Texas state champion Melissa officially finished No. 1 in the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll, the Association announced on Thursday.

The (38-1) Cardinals were the top team in 15 of the 16 NFCA rankings this season and captured the 5A, Division 1 crown with a 4-2 victory over Barbers Hill on May 30. Melissa avenged its only loss — a 2-0 defeat to Lake Belton on May 14 — with two straight triumphs over the Broncos to claim their best-of-three regional final series, then rolled past Aledo, 15-4, in a May 24 state semifinal and the aforementioned Eagles in the final.

Fellow state champions Calvary Baptist Academy (Louisiana Division III Select), Lake Creek (Texas 5A, Division 2) and Bishop O’Connell (Virginia Division I) finished second through fourth, while Texas 6A, Division 1 regional semifinalist Katy rounds out the top five.

In all, 18 of the 25 teams in the final poll won state championships. No. 6 Doral Academy (Florida 6A), No. 7 Owyhee (Idaho 6A), eighth-ranked Skyview (Washington 4A), ninth-ranked Ridgeview (Oregon 5A), No. 10 Taunton (Massachusetts Division 1), No. 12 Glenwood (Illinois 3A), 13th-ranked La Salle Academy (Rhode Island Division 1), 14th-ranked Orange Beach (Alabama 4A), No. 16 Lebanon (Ohio Division 1), No. 19 Beecher (Illinois 2A), No. 20 Sam Houston (Louisiana Non-Select Division 1), Benton (Arkansas 5A), 23rd-ranked St. Anthony’s (New York CHSAA) and No. 25 (tied) Norco (California Southern Section Division 1) were the titlists not previously mentioned.

Additionally, No. 11 Donovan Catholic was New Jersey’s Non-Public A state runner-up, while No. 15 Summerville finished second in the South Carolina 5A, Division 1 state tournament.

State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.
