LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rain has been the only thing to slow down undefeated Buford this season, postponing the top-ranked Wolves’ showdown with No. 20 North Cobb on Wednesday in the Georgia Class 6A elite eight at the South Commons Complex.
Instead, the two teams will try again today, with the winner slated to play again later and the loser facing an elimination game on Friday. Buford (32-0) remained atop the NFCA Summer/Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll for an eighth week, while the (26-8) Warriors continue to be highly regarded despite falling out of the top 10 in week five.
Fourth-ranked East Coweta (28-3) and No. 10 Wesleyan (26-3) also had their Georgia state playoff games moved to today. The Indians play Archer in the 6A tournament, while Wesleyan faces Whitefield Academy in a Private School classification elite eight matchup.
Elsewhere, Colorado wrapped up its season on Saturday with No. 6 Broomfield (26-2) capturing the state 5A crown with a 17-7 triumph over Legend, and ninth-ranked University (27-2) scoring a 5-4 win over three-time reigning titlist and longtime nemesis Eaton in the 3A championship. The Bulldogs finally scored their second state title — and first since 2019 — after finishing runner-up in three of the previous four 3A state tournaments, losing to Eaton in both 2022 and 2024 and Lutheran in 2021.
The Missouri state tournament concludes this weekend. No. 14 Raymore-Peculiar (23-4) plays Lindbergh in Thursday’s Class 5 semifinals, while newly-ranked Grain Valley (30-6) faces Rock Bridge (25-10) in a matchup of the poll’s No. 19 and No. 25 squads in the bracket’s other semi.
State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Summer/Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule. Five states — Colorado, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri — play a fall fastpitch schedule, while Iowa recently completed its summer season.
