LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lone Grove continued to roll and is No. 1 in the GameChanger/NFCA Summer-Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll for a fifth straight week, the Association announced on Thursday afternoon.
The (38-0) Longhorns finished their sweep of Mount St. Mary, 17-0 last Thursday, after winning the first game just as easily, 13-0 on Wednesday. Lone Grove has an Oklahoma Class 4A state quarterfinal game against McLoud up next on Friday.
The rankings were unchanged through the sixth position, with four of those next five teams staying undefeated. The exception was No. 6 Enid (38-1), which won its only contest, 10-1 over Sand Springs.
Warner (30-3) moved up two places to seventh after winning two playoff games before falling to Dale, 4-2 in eight innings, in the Oklahoma Class 2A state championship.
Holy Family (20-3), Chillicothe (28-2) and Buford (24-3) also surged two spots to round out the revised top 10.
Legend (19-4) is knocking on the door of that first group after routing two opponents by a combined 28-0 margin ahead of Friday’s Colorado Class 5A regional playoff game versus Douglas. In Georgia, South Effingham (26-2) was similarly efficient in a pair of lopsided triumphs over Greenbrier in a Class 6A first-round playoff series.
Meanwhile, Nebraska’s state tournament features a pair of top 25 matchups later today, with No. 20 Gretna East (26-4) taking on No. 25 Grand Island Northwest (23-3) and No. 21 Hastings (27-4) facing 24th-ranked Gretna (23-5) in separate Class B bracket semifinals.
State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the GameChanger/NFCA Summer-Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule. Five states — Colorado, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri — play a fall fastpitch schedule, while Iowa recently completed its summer season.
