LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Texas extended its season-opening win streak to 11 games and is the near-unanimous No. 1 in this week’s NFCA/GoRout Division Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Longhorns (11-0) swept through their own Bevo Classic, which included a pair of wins over then-No. 11 Texas Tech, and earned 30 of 31 first-place votes.
The first win over the Red Raiders (8-3) was a 2-1 nine-inning affair before the Longhorns capped off the tournament with an 11-0 thumping. Texas also triumphed over Maryland twice and UMass.
No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 3 Florida swapped as the Sooners (10-0) remained undefeated with five wins at Baylor’s Getterman Classic, while the Gators (13-1) suffered their first loss of the season. OU trumped Hofstra and then-No. 24 Baylor twice, all in five innings, posting two shutouts, including a perfect game against the host Bears, and outscoring their opposition 36-4. Despite dropping their final contest of the week to then-No. 12 Duke, Florida posted seven wins, three via shutout.
UCLA remained at No. 4 after a 4-1 showing at the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational. The Bruins (9-1) collected three top-25 wins over then-No. 9 Oklahoma State, then-No. 14 Alabama and then-No. 23 Kentucky.
Following 5-0 weekends, Tennessee and LSU each improved one spot to No. 5 and No. 6 respectively, while Texas A&M slipped to No. 7. The Lady Vols (10-1) pitched four more shutouts and scored 48 runs, while the Tigers (10-0) continued their early-season dominance at home, which included four nationally-ranked wins – two each over then-No. 22 Northwestern and then-No. 17 Virginia Tech.
The Aggies (9-1) notched a 4-1 record at the Shriners with wins over Wichita State, UCF, Virginia and Charlotte, suffering their first defeat of the season to Oklahoma State.
No. 8 Florida State, also at the Shriners, went 4-0, with No. 9 Georgia and No. 10 Arkansas rounding out the top 10.
Previously-mentioned Oklahoma State (5-4) dipped out of the top-10 to No. 14, while two more Shriner participants Missouri (2-4) and Alabama (5-6) plummeted down the rankings to No. 22 and No. 23 after four-loss weeks.
Making their way into the rankings this week are No. 20 Auburn, No. 21 South Carolina and No. 25 San Diego State. The Tigers (11-0) and Aztecs (8-2) went a combined 11-0 at the Shriners, while the Gamecocks have recorded six shutouts and outscored their opposition 81-13 during their 10-0 start. Auburn picked up wins over Oklahoma State, RV Liberty and then-RV Clemson, while SDSU knocked off Alabama, Mizzou and then-RV Wichita State.
Northwestern (5-5), Baylor (6-4) and then-No. 25 Washington (5-5) fell out of the rankings.
