Type: drill

Purpose: To work on the fundamentals of visualizing and driving the ball where it should go for each pitch on the main field.

Explanation: Place three lined up straight at home plate about six feet away from each other, with three buckets of hard balls for each tee. Line up the tee farthest to the left of home plate with a soft toss net where you want the players to hit an inside pitch (5/6 hole), then place a tee on home plate with a net up the middle for pitches down the middle (on the pitcher's mound), then place a tee to the right of home plate with a net for where the players will hit outside pitches to the right side of the field (3/4 hole). The nets are about 15-20 feet away on the field, giving the players a visualization of where you want the ball hit. The smaller the target net, the more precise the hits have too be.

Have a hitter and a partner feeding the tee for each tee. Each hitter will go through a bucket of balls and then rotate tees. After all three tees have been hit off of, have the players gather the balls and the feeders are now going to be hitting and rotating.

You can advance this further by front tossing it with targets out on the field or live pitching. The feeders would then shag the balls, and a net would be placed by the backstop to protect the balls hitting it from the front toss or live pitching (you can incorporate more advanced pitches when you do this, like the change-up or rise-ball for each tee.)

If you don't have a net to use, you can always use cones in which they have to hit in between the cones. Make sure that the players are hitting off the tee correctly for the inside, down the middle, and outside tee to increase their success throughout the rotations. Have the front tossers or live pitchers go one at a time to ensure safety.
