Type: drill

Purpose: Defensive fundamentals and conditioning

Explanation: Start with a line of players at the shortstop position, one player at second base, one at first base and one at home. Coach hits the ball from home plate to shortstop, who fields the ball and throws to first base. As the shortstop releases the ball, another ball is hit to second base, who fields the ball and works force out double play, with shortstop making the tag at second base and throwing to first base.

Each time first base throws the ball to home, who will feed the coach the next ball. Everyone rotates – shortstop becomes second base, second base becomes first base, first base becomes home and home rotates to shortstop line.

Repeat and speed up for conditioning, as player skill level increases. This is a good drill for tryouts as well, because everyone plays multiple positions in a short amount of time.
